Scholarships for nursing are free money to help you pay for your nursing education.  Some scholarships will designate what the funds received need to be applied to. Some will apply the funds towards your tuition, books and some assist with room and board expenses as well.

Scholarship money for school does not need to be repaid, unlike financial aid which does require repayment of the money that is borrowed.

Scholarships for nursing are awarded based on a variety of factors. These scholarships are available for a variety of nursing programs from the RN program to nursing graduate studies. Each individual scholarship has specific criteria required to qualify for the free money for nursing school. 

  • Some are based on educational status such as GPA or SAT scores.
  • Others require possession of a special talent such as singing, playing a musical instrument or ability to play a particular sport.
  • Others require proof of financial need.

Scholarships for nursing are great opportunities to help you get through your nursing degree program with less financial debt.  We encourage everyone to apply to as many scholarship programs as you have time for.  Yes, they can be time consuming but if you meet the qualifications and could potentially graduate debt free why not do it.  School break times such as Christmas break and Spring break would be great times to get some of the pieces of the applications under way.  Many, if not all require some type of essay.  We recommend you look at what the essay requirements are on several and you can often have 1 or 2 essay templates that you can adjust for each individual application.

So what are your options for scholarships for nursing school? 

Here are a few companies we have found that offer scholarships in health care every year.  

The SeniorCare Aging Matters Scholarship.  Do you demonstrate that 'Aging Matters'?  Do you "currently care for an aging loved one, work within the senior community, or intend to pursue a career that positively impacts the elder population"?  If you answered yes this scholarship opportunity is for college students just like you!  This annual $1500 scholarship starts accepting applications October 15 for the following year. Applications are being accepted now and the deadline is May 15, 2017 and the winner will be selected on June 15, 2017.


The Cherokee uniforms A Nurse I Am Scholarship program is now accepting applications for the 2017 financial awards ($2000).  Applications are due by March 10, 2017.  Notifications will be sent to recipients by June 30, 2017.  To be eligible for this scholarship you must start nursing classes by January 31, 2017.


The March of Dimes continues to offer $5,000 scholarships yearly to nurses enrolled in graduate programs for maternal child nursing. The application deadline for 2017 was January 13, 2017 and the winners will be announced in May 2017.  


The Tylenol Future Care Scholarship fund continues to offer a total of $250,000 in scholarships towards education in health care.  In 2016 40 students were awarded scholarships. The 2017 application process should be posted in the near future.  The deadline has been in June with recipients being announced over the summer. 


The HRSA Health Workforce Nurse Corps Scholarship program is now accepting applications until May 11, 2017.  This program requires a 2 year commitment at a critical shortage facility in a Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA).  This is a very selective program with strict requirements and qualifications but it does cover most expenses and you will have a job when you graduate.
